Celebrating 50 years of Ellefson Transportation Group

With roots in the relocation industry dating back to the 1940’s, the Ellefson family has established a reputation for quality and experience when it comes to relocating their clients. From residential relocations to commercial moves, logistics projects, and more, their knowledge base continues to grow from the family’s early days in Charleston, SC.

In the late 1940’s Mervin A. Ellefson, grandfather of current owners, Brian and Nyles Ellefson, worked as a van operator for Grey Van Lines located in Charleston, SC.  In 1952, Merv became a storage contractor for Grey Van Lines and by 1966 he relocated to Augusta, GA to open a “company store” in that market.  By this time, Merv’s son Donald had joined his father in the moving business as a contract driver for Greyhound Van Lines and made the move from Charleston to Augusta with his father and young family.  M. A. Ellefson and Son (now Ellefson Transportation Group) was incorporated in June 1967 with Mervin at the helm until his death in 1970.  Don, along with his wife Ulla, took full charge of the agency at that time.

Throughout their 50 years in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA)., the Ellefson Family has celebrated many milestones and has worked with several Van Lines and is currently an agent for United Van Lines. After 10 years in Augusta, the Ellefsons became an agent for Global Van Lines in 1977, joining a small but growing Van Line family of agents. During their time as an agent for Global Van Lines, the Ellefson family was named agent of the year twice, in 1988 and 1995. As business needs continued to grow, the Ellefson Family made the decision to move under the larger United Van Lines umbrella, becoming an agent for them in 1997.

In addition to developing a name for themselves in the relocation industry in Augusta, GA, and throughout the South East, Ellefson Transportation Group (ETG) is also the parent company of several subsidiary companies including ACME Moving and Storage, Augusta Data Storage, and Augusta Portable Storage (an agent for Go-Mini’s container storage).  By managing each of these companies under one roof, the Ellefson brothers have a unique opportunity to offer a variety of custom service options to their residential and commercial clients.

Augusta Data Storage, the records management and shredding segment of the business, has experienced continued growth as industry needs evolve. In a time where information security is a top priority for every business, Augusta Data Storage seeks to provide solutions for every step in the document life cycle. From secure storage for records, tapes and more, to their NAID AAA certified Document Destruction process, document imaging, and E-waste solutions, their Records Management solutions are just as varied as the unique needs of each of their Customers.

ADSI Moving Systems, an agent for United Van Lines continues to maintain its reputation as one of the areas most established and quality driven relocation firms. As UniGroup, the parent company for United Van Lines, has continued to experience growth, the opportunities for ADSI Moving Systems have continued to expand. The company recently began focusing efforts to provide unique logistics services to hospitality and retail clients across the CSRA.

ACME Moving and Storage specializes in Military relocations providing support to local personnel at Fort Gordon and across the CSRA. With the upcoming addition of Cyber Command, ACME looks to continue providing quality services as the base experiences growth in the coming years. ACME is also registered under schedule 48 for office relocations as a GSA supporting vendor.

Augusta Portable Storage, Inc., a franchise for Go-Minis, the youngest of the Ellefson Transportation Group companies, celebrated 10 years of serving the CSRA in 2016. Go-Mini’s portable containers represent a unique opportunity for the Ellefson Transportation Group line of services. Recognizing the shift towards affordability and the Do-It-Yourself mentality of many of their customers at the downturn of the economy, ETG sought to find a solution for customers who still needed their services, but with a more scaled down and cost-effective approach.

As the Augusta, GA area experiences rapid growth, the Ellefsons have embraced a change and growth mindset to ensure that their organization will continue to stand the test of time. As a recent testament to their lasting impact, Brian and Nyles Ellefson were named the 2016 Entrepreneurs of the Year by the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce at their December 2016 Economic Luncheon, an honor that speaks volumes about the work they have put into building upon the foundation laid out for them by their Father and Grandfather. In 1967 Ellefson Transportation Group began as an operation of less than 10 people and has diversified to 4 different business lines and almost 100 employees occupying over 100,000 sq. ft. of warehouse and office space and another 26,000 on the way in 2017.

The Ellefson brothers constantly demonstrate what small family businesses are all about. Their organization is always looking for ways to give back and stay plugged-in to the community that has helped support them and their business growth over the years. From involvement in local chambers of commerce, to supporting non-profits and charities across the CSRA, Team ETG is committed to building a family and community based atmosphere for themselves and those they serve each and every day.
